Hi Gail, I went down to Hains Point at around 3PM on Thursday and finally located the loon (sleeping with its head tucked into its wings) right at the point, where the Wash. channel meets the river. It was very close to a red channel marker #2. Finally a passing boat awoke the bird, and after a bit of fussy preening it started to feed and moved in so close that at one point it was less than 20 feet from the sea wall. What a spectacular show it put on for me, but I was alone and could share it with no one! Lots of fishermen, picnicers, etc. but no other birders... When I left, after 45 minutes, it was still actively feeding and moving upriver along the sea wall, so that you could not see it from the parkink lot if you were just driving around. I parked in the first lot on the right as you come around the point, and viewed the bird forn the sidewalk where it bends around the point and goes up the channel.
