Just a comment on the use of tapes -- this can be detrimental to breeding birds and is generally discouraged. It is especially a problem if done frequently. It is felt that use of tapes contributed to the extirpation of the Swainson's Warbler population along MD/DE border. Food for thought .......... The other advantage of the scheduled walks is that they enable you to get into areas that are not otherwise available to the public. You cannot count on Lake Allen being open all of the time since sometimes there is gun practice which leads to the lake being closed. Message from Stan Arnold- I'll be leading a bird walk at the refuge on Friday, 19 June, 7-10 a.m. The best birds at the refuge right now are Worm-eating, Prothonotary, and Kentucky Warblers, Grasshopper Sparrow, and Blue Grosbeak. I've also seen one Summer Tanager so far this season. We also have a Black-crowned Night Heron that's been hanging around the back gate, but this part of the refuge, unfortunately, will be closed for a month as contractors assess the impact of the old dump in the area. It'll be time for immature birds to begin wandering pretty soon, and we may get some interesting sightings during the summer months. Lots and lots of warblers around, other than those mentioned above. I've begun using tapes on a limited basis, and this has allowed some very good looks at some of the warblers. If you can make the walk, please give the refuge a call at 410-674-3304 to get on the list.
