Hi! On Sunday, June 21, I took the tour boat from Pt.Lookout, St,Mary's County, to Ewell, on Smith Island, Somerset County. The trip over produced Royal & Common Terns and 4 Wilson's Storm-Petrels [2 in St.Mary's & 2 in Somerset]. A hot Summer miday is not the best time to bird, but Smith Island had all the typical Herons: Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Cattle Egret, Litte Blue Heron, Tricolored Heron, Green Heron, Black-crowned Night-Heron and Yellow-crowned Night-Heron. The only shorebirds were nesting Eastern Willets. Lots of calling Clapper Rails & Seaside Sparrows. There were a few Brown Pelicans about, but according to the locals, they are not nesting on the island. Wilson's Storm-Petrels are fairly regular on the Tour Boat trip from late June and into August...pay special attention whenever you are near and of the small fleets of fishing boats and scan the chum lines. Good Birding! Jim Jim Stasz North Beach MD jlstasz@aol.com
