In late May and early June, there were several Black-crowned Night Herons frequenting the ponds near the Shady Grove Metro Station (on Redlands Road). They haven't been there recently. In that same time, the baby Canada Geese at the ponds have gotten quite big. To my way of thinking, the geese have gotten too big for a Night Heron to eat. So I'm wondering... Black-crowned Night Herons are renowned as predators on baby birds. Has anyone noticed if they are eating baby Canada Geese? Has anyone taken a look inside the nests at the National Zoo, seeking regurgitated bones? Just some questions that occur to my twisted mind as the bus drives by the ponds. The Shady Grove Metro is a fine place to bird. As I wait for the bus on the east side of the station where the drainage ditch is, I get to see breeding Yellow Warblers lurking in the willows.
