Whip-poor-wills are reliable at Soldier's Delight, a few miles west of Baltimore; take Md. 26, Liberty Road west from Beltway exit 18B, about four miles west along a mostly arrow-straight, busy road; the road will take a right bend - left bend and a large water tower will come into view directly ahead with two traffic lights in between. Bear right just BEFORE the second traffic light onto Deer Park Road. Continue along Deer Park Road, throught a four-way stop, through some tight turns up a steep hill, then another mile or so and scrubby woods will appear on both side of the road. Then turn left into a gravel lot with a historical marker denoting Soldier's Delight as our nation's first Chromium mining region. If the traffic is too noisy or the lot is too crowded, take one of the trails downhill all the way to a power line break and listen there; the Whip-poor-wills will have an evening chorus about a half hour after sunset; slightly earlier if clouds make it darker. The power line break area also has a resident Chat and in some years has hosted a Summer Tanager. These birds might not be as distant as the W. Md. birds or the Calvert County birds.
