Marcia,
With Sedge Wren being an extremely rare breeder in Maryland your
report from Deal Island is all the more interesting.  Could you give us
some more information, please?

Glad to give more info.  Sorry I didn't add more at first, but since I had never birded Somerset before and since the Yellowbook shows Sedge Wren as a Somerset breeder, I didn' t realize it would be of interest.  Here are the details:

Bird was seen/heard at approx. 7 pm on June 25 near the more easterly (and shorter) of the two dirt entrance roads to Deal Island WMA, on the east side of the road, maybe a quarter- to a half-mile in from the main road (but I can't swear to distance when driving down a dirt road full of potholes at 5 mi. or less per hour).  Bird was heard (slightly raspy/hoarse (not sweet), stuttery, chippy kind of trill)  about 100 ft from the car.  I tried to coax it up, but the bird stayed in the short vegetation and I could not get a good look.  All I could see was that is was wren-shaped (small size, brown, round body, cocked tail, sharp bill).  If I had seen the bird without hearing it, I would have assumed it was Marsh Wren.  But the song was quite different than that of  Marsh Wren or the many Seaside Sparrows which were present a bit further down the entrance road.

I first saw a Sedge Wren in the shrubs by the boardwalk trail at Bombay Hook three or four years ago - that time I assumed it was a Marsh Wren, until it sang, and I have never forgotten the song.  It impressed me because it is so different than that of the Marsh.  My most recent sighting of Sedge Wren, before this, was in April of this year in Florida, at Ding Darling.  I also had them in June of 97 in Michigan.
