Jeff,
 One possible way of telling juvenile/immatures from adults is by their blue-
gray eyes. Once adults, they become black(ish). A few species of owls young 
have this feature (blueish-gray eyes) including the Barred. Fledglings do have 
that downy wispy look to them, but grow out their "adult" feathers soon. I 
don't think they have a strictly juvenile plumage otherwise, but look for the 
different eye color. I also don't know when the get the darker colored eyes, 
but if they're young, the eye color is obvious.
