Hi all Just got back from a trip to Newfoundland. Stayed mainly on the East Coast--Avalon Peninsula. Saw a lot of birds but not the variety I thought. The following is a partial list of the interesting birds, etc. I was able to see: 20,000 pair nesting gannets (quite a sight and a lot of noise) 10,000+ pair nesting black-legged kittiwakes with chicks (how cute) razorbills thick and thin billed murres nesting eagles nesting osprey herring and ring billed gulls hundreds of robins, yellow-rumped warblers and white-throated sparrows (singing everywhere) 1 willow ptarmigan 1 american bittern 1 hairy woodpecker As you can see, the variety was sparse but the numbers were high. We have the 3 H's in Maryland for weather--hot, hazy and humid; they have the 3 D's in Newfoundland--damp, dreary and drizzly!! Only saw sun one day out of 8! Temps were in the 40's at night and 50's during the day. Common weather for them. Food was "fishy" and plentiful. Also saw moose, caribou, snowshoe hares, fin, minke and humpback whales--the purpose of my visit. The whales were plentiful and playful. Had some real close sightings. It's off to California in two weeks to do my "whale thing" again. Hope to see some birds, also. If you'd like to hear more, email me directly. Sure missed all the sightings from MDOsprey. Glad to be back to civilization. Janelle Dietrich Bowie, MD lovewhales@ccconline.net
