The rail was at the Enid Haupt Garden this morning (8:15, August 7). It was near the main Independence Avenue gate to the garden, on the National Museum of African Art side. It is still alert and looking well, except for the left wing. One little note: I found that the Birds of North America excerpts on the web include a section on the Virginia Rail, http://www.birdsofna.org/excerpts/varail.html This excerpt tells me that Virginia Rails undergo a complete wing and tail molt in late Summer. Given this, the Virginia Rail may be at the Smithsonian for an extended stay! Does anyone now when 'late Summer' starts? Jim Jim Felley Smithsonian Institution irmss668@sivm.si.edu
