Barry and I made another excursion to Rock Creek Park, birding the ridge, maintenance yard and "dog field." There was less activity than yesterday, nevertheless we saw a number of fall neotropical migrants: August 21, 1998: Black-throated Blue (ad.M, 1), Canada (4), Chestnut-sided (4), Redstart (6), Blackburnian (1), Yellowthroat (1), probable Wilson's (in flight only, 1), Red-eyed Vireo (6), Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (7), Eastern Phoebe (6), Empidonax sp. (seen only briefly, prob. Acadian,1), E. Pewee (1), Ruby-throated Hummingbird (6), House Wren (2), Yellow-billed Cuckoo (2), Bobolink (2). The passage will probably slow as the cold front dissipates. But of course it is only the overture to the autumn bird symphony! Gail Mackiernan and Barry Cooper gail@umdd.umd.edu
