The article you're thinking of is probably, "Just Winging It": A
Neophyte Joins the Bird-Watching Flock at Virginia's Bay Bridge-Tunnel,"
by Michael H. Brown, which appeared on May 6, 1998. The URL is
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-adv/archives/front.htm. Unfortunately,
the POST charges for articles that are more than two weeks old. You can
search for the headlines with a brief synopsis at no charge, but the
cost is $1.50 per article on weekends or evenings. Weekdays, the charge
is $2.95.
