MD Birders

This morning (Sunday, Aug. 23) I saw a male Brewster's Warbler in the woods
along Watts Branch in Rockville. Actually, it was an F1 backcross between a
Brewster's and a Golden-winged, depicted on page 141 of Dunn and Garrett.
This woods can be reached from Rt 355 north of Montgomery College by taking
College Parkway (starts at College Plaza shopping center) to the second stop
sign at Princeton Place. Turn right and follow Princeton to its end at
Fordham. A trail takes you into the woods and shortly intersects a trail that
parallels the creek, the spot where I saw the bird foraging high in the trees
along with a Pine Warbler, a male Redstart and a Pewee. To reach College
Parkway from 270 take the Montgomery Ave exit and take Nelson Street (there's
only one way to go) which intersects Montgomery at the exit. The second stop
sign is College Parkway. Turn left and then left again at Princeton. You can
see why this subdivision is called College Gardens.

Migrants tend to remain in the same places in these woods, so you should be
able to locate this bird with a bit of hunting. It's of note that several
hybrids were seen in Cape May earlier this week when the cold front came
through.
