A few weeks ago, I mentioned a chimney in Northern
Virginia that is good for Chimney Swifts in the fall.
Last night, I watched an incredible flock of them
go to roost. I would estimate something on the order
of a thousand. To get to this location, take the
Gallows Rd. exit and go outside the Beltway for about
a mile. Just after you cross the intersection with
Rte. 50, you will see the large chimney on the left
at a school. I would arrive by 7:00. There was a
lot of action at about 7:15 last night. All the birds
were in the chimney by 7:30. It is interesting to
get there early and watch the birds come in from all
directions and assemble around the chimney.
