A cool front went through Cape May in the early afternoon on Thursday
and provided for a very enjoyable day. The winds turned a breezy NW
and brought good numbers of Falcons. I took the 8:40am ferry and
arrived a little after 10am. I watched from the pond nearest the
Lighthouse. It was a delightful flight with mostly Peregrines,
Merlins and Kestrels using a very close flight path - numerous birds
were just overhead and most were closer than 100 yards. The
Peregrines were mostly adults. The unofficial count at the pond was
about 85 Peregrines and 50 Merlins. The official Thursday Cape May
     count was 197 Peregrines, 117 Merlins, 485 Kestrel, 32 Cooper's, 51
     Sharp-shinned, 101 Ospreys & 13 Harriers. Friday brought northerly
winds and higher and fewer birds before I left at 2:30 - about 10
     Peregrines, 4 Bald Eagles, 40 Broad-wings, 1 Red-tail and moderate
numbers of Cooper's, Sharp-shinned, Ospreys, Harriers and Kestrels. I
didn't get up early enough to get a prime warbler watching spot, but
there were good numbers of Palms around. I was told a Eurasian Wigeon
was in the Hawkwatch Platform Pond. Happy birding, Dan Eberly
