Howdy All! Well. Off and running again. This weekend will be easier, however, as I'm driving down to Hatteras, NC for a pelagic tomorrow (Oct 10). Sunday's trip was canned due to lack of interest. I'll probably bird the coast Oct 11 before heading back home. Only new species for the year would be quite remote, but my chances are better on a pelagic I think (hope, wish, fingers crossed, etc) This was a tough decision as Great Skua has been reported 4x in the last 2 wks from Nova Scotia (the ferry). Even though it's late, I'm still hoping for the remote shot at a rare straggler tomorrow. Maybe White-tailed Tropicbird or White-faced Storm-Petrel or who knows?. A great dilemma, eh? Oh, well. I hope I'm right <grin>. At any rate, pelagic trips rank as one of my most fun birding experiences. It's still like a venture into the unknown... Ha! And sometimes you actually see birds! Ok. I could not resist a little sarcasm. If you take some trips, you'll eventually see some unbelievably sloooooow days, too. Finally, the Gulf Stream appears to be pretty close to the coast (as of Oct 9) and the water temps are in the 78-80 F range, which is good. Your chances for good luck increase when you put yourself in a decent location, at a good time of year, in favorable conditions. -Greg Miller Lusby, MD
