>What's so great about the rude behavior in the story you mentioned? I don't >think the hotlines should be run by grand pooh-bahs whose role in life is to >"deny" sightings. Kurt: Enough already. Nobody chased your bird and some had the temerity to wonder about a tough ID. Just get over it. It happens to everyone. And there are no "grand pooh-bahs" (whatever that means) running hotlines. Most of the people you would call pooh-bahs don't have the social skills or persistence to handle the endless clerical tasks involved. The closest thing we have ever had to a pooh-bah running the hotline in this part of the world was Claudia Wilds, and no one, anywhere, ever, has done it better. Otherwise, it is the volunteers and the dedicated, putting up with far too much hooey and abuse for no reward to make a lot of birding possible for the rest of us. Lord knows I would never be able or willing to do it. >The more I hear about hotlines, the more they turn my stomach. But I had >already decided to stop reporting to them before hearing this story. He said, stompng his foot as he took his ball and went home. "Everywhere I go I'm asked if the university stifles writers. My opinion is that they don't stifle enough of them. There's many a bestseller that could have been prevented by a good teacher." Flannery O'Connor Rick Blom rblom@blazie.com 4318 Cowan Place Belcamp, Maryland 21017 (410)575-6086
