Larry Cartwright lead an FAS trip to the refuge today, 10 Oct 98 from
0800-1100.  It was cloudy, winds 5-20 mph and last night was a bit turbulent
for migrants.  The trip focused on the northeast portion of the refuge, near
Belmont Bay and the "baseball field".  Some 60 species were observed during,
and just after the trip and the highlights were....

Osprey (1), Bald Eagle (7, 3 adults), Sharpie (2), Cooper's (1), Red Shoulder
(2), Kestrel (2), Chimney Swift (100+), Red-headed Woodpecker (1), Phoebe (3),
Tree Swallow (8), House Wren (1), Golden-crowned Kinglet (1), Ruby-crowned
Kinglet (3), Catbird (2), Brown Thrasher (1), Red-eyed Vireo (1), Magnolia
(1), Back-thr Blue (1), Yellow-rumped (195), Palm (25), Common Yellowthroat
(2), E. Towhee (6), Field Sp (2), Song Sp (17), Swamp Sp (2), and White-
throated Sp (1 - !?)

The refuge is being opened on a regular basis to the public on Sundays from
0730-1200 or later and Saturdays from 1200-1700.  Call the Mason Neck office
for more details.
