Folks, Todd Day and I went to Pt LO today, 11 Oct 98, 0730 to 1600. The birding was fantastic! A full report will soon follow, but I must point out the great opportunity that Pt LO affords. We had all the regular raptors, including a huge falcon showing - Kestrel (21), Merlin (1) and Peregrine (4). Sharpies (22) and Bald Eagles (6+) were also numerous. We began with Common Loons (2) and quickly moved on Monarch Butterflies (200+ in the bushes at the point!) and were impressed by the 10 species of warblers. The Brown Thrashers (15+) were active throughout the area but the Barred Owl barreling through the brush in "Thrush Alley" sending all the Wood Thrush (12) in to the Statute of Liberty mode was quite exciting. I was amazed at the Phoebes - they were everywhere today (34). The day ended as we extracted Saltmash Sharp-tailed Sparrows (4) from the tidal marshes off of Long Neck Road. Curiously, of the 85 or so species we spotted, we found NOT ONE DUCK! Kurt Gaskill
