Christine, Good luck birding while walking the puppy! I'm in a similar situation, having adopted a "pound puppy" this past July. It makes for very challenging birding, I will say! He (SCOUT) has, however, alerted me to more than a few flyover birds that I might have missed otherwise, as he watched them come in over my head, and I noticed him watching the bird. One was a Black Vulture flying in low. I have learned to carry my bins no matter how little I think I will see. There is always something. We got a retractable, 30 ft. lead, and this gives him some room to roam while I try and focus on a bird, before he draws the lead taut and pulls me out of focus! Like I said, challenging. I can offer no clues as to the birds you saw, but I had a bird (falcon-like) fly over a field early this morning, that I swear was a Peregrine. It even called as it went by, but I didn't get my bins on it till it was way past me, and can't really say if it was a Peregrine or not. Oh well.... Happy birding and puppy walking!
