HI Ospreyers:

For years all of my birding was done accompanied by one or more of my dogs,
primarily because I was birding alone in often remote areas. My dog
Remora (Ch. Katahdin Remora CD, a standard schnauzer) did all of my Atlas
blocks with me, as well as all my May counts until a couple of years ago.
Now at 15, she stays home albeit reluctantly. I estimate she has a life list
of about 350 species.

Now my husband and I take three dogs along on many jaunts -- the two young
ones are just learning what birding entails -- mostly (for them) a lot
of waiting and being still while we look at birds. We play it safe and tie
leads to trees as our woods are filled with deer and other enticements.
Or I stand on the loop at the end, so that a movement won't jerk my bins
at a critical moment.

It is easier to go birding without them, but three sets of (guilt-provoking)
eyes makes it hard to leave them home!

Cheers, Gail Mackiernan
