Our appetite whetted by yesterday's trip with the Howard County Bird Club, Fran and I went for a bit of a wander around southeastern Frederick County this morning to see what might turn up. First good bird was actually at Lake Needwood, near Rockville: a female Northern Shoveler sharing the lake with the usual mass quantities of Mallards and Canada Geese. In Frederick County: Along Monocacy Bottom Road Downy Woodpecker 2 Hairy Woodpecker 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker 3 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 5 Northern Flicker 7 Pileated Woodpecker 2 Yellow-rumped Warbler..many White-crowned Sparrows 60-70, many singing, both juvenile and adult Chipping Sparrows 2 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 Along Oland Road Northern Harrier, male American Pipit 8 Horned Lark 15 Savannah Sparrow 7 Along the unpaved portion of Greenfield Road White-throated Sparrow 70+ in one large flock We had our first yard Juncos for the year this evening, in Colesville, MD.
