Our appetite whetted by yesterday's trip with the Howard County Bird Club, Fran
and I went for a bit of a wander around southeastern Frederick County this
morning to see what might turn up. First good bird was actually at Lake
Needwood, near Rockville: a female Northern Shoveler sharing the lake with the
usual mass quantities of Mallards and Canada Geese.

In Frederick County:
  Along Monocacy Bottom Road
    Downy Woodpecker 2
    Hairy Woodpecker 1
    Red-bellied Woodpecker 3
    Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 5
    Northern Flicker 7
    Pileated Woodpecker 2
    Yellow-rumped Warbler..many
White-crowned Sparrows 60-70, many singing, both juvenile and adult
    Chipping Sparrows 2
    Lincoln's Sparrow 1

  Along Oland Road
    Northern Harrier, male
    American Pipit 8
    Horned Lark 15
    Savannah Sparrow 7

Along the unpaved portion of Greenfield Road
White-throated Sparrow 70+ in one large flock

We had our first yard Juncos for the year this evening, in Colesville, MD.

Best,
Norm & Fran
