Most of us just call a junco a junco. Others feel more
comfortable using the AOU name Dark-eyed Junco. Others like to be more
specific and call them Slate-colored Juncos. To the best of my knowledge
no one is contemplating splitting Dark-eyed Junco. But remember that
Pink-sided Juncos are reported most years in this region. Sometimes
Oregon Juncos also.
As for Yellow-rumped Warblers. Many of us are in the age group
that learned Myrtle Warbler before the species were lumped and we still
use that name. Others of us want to be more specific about the kind of
Yellow-rumped Warblers seen. But remember again that several years ago a
few Audubon's Warblers made it to this region for the first confirmed
records in Maryland.
Similarly, before Northern Oriole was split, we still called our
orioles Baltimores.
