Kurt: To the best of my knowledge, the current Virginia maximum count for Pied-billed Grebes is 147 birds seen 2 Feb 1997 at South Holston Lake (Rob Biller, Ron Carrico, Wallace Coffey, Larry McDaniel, Geoff Larsen). This is right on the Virginia-Tennessee line and the birds spent the late evening hours in both Tennessee and Virginia and then moved to the Virginia waters to roost. That's where we counted them in Virginia. Dick Peake and Susan Powers reported 170 birds at the same location 22 Feb 1997 but listed his birds as South Holston Lake Tennessee. This is also the location where both the Tennessee and Virginia high count for Eared Grebes was made (21 birds 6 Oct 1996). Wallace Coffey Bristol, TN
