A quick check of the CBC data for Hermit Thrush (from Thayers software) suggests that Hermits are most abundant in the "Dogwood" belt on the southern and near southern states. There are a few pockets of winter abundance in central to northern California. If dogwood berries are one of the primary food sources of Hermits, then this would suggest Hermit Thrush are more abundant, relatively speaking, in the southern states than elsewhere. The CBC results for this year may yield data that could test Todd Day's hypothesis - that is, a decrease in Hermit concentration in these parts and an slight increase in surrounding areas that were not as affected by the drought (North Carolina?)/ Kurt Gaskill, kurtcapt87@aol.com
