Maybe you could try putting an owl or peregrine decoy on your roof or a ledge
near the damaged area.  Or if you want to be really realistic, put one in a
nearby tree.  I don't know if this will work for woodpeckers, but it seems to
keep the gulls off the roofs at the beach.  If you ever have trouble with
something trying to nest in a part of your house, just put a fairly large and
realistic looking rubber snake there.  My dad used to keep them hanging from the
rafters of his pontoon boat, and we never had birds, squirrels, or insects
nesting under the collapsible roof.  I doubt that the snake option would keep
the pileated's away, unless they excavating for a nest, but its a inexpensive
experiment.
