Barry and I went over to the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center's Vistor Center this afternoon, as we were in the neighborhood, thinking to check to see if there were any gulls on Lake Reddington (behind the Visitor's Ctr.) Well, there were about 1500 gulls -- mostly Ringbilled, Herring and a few Greater Black-backs and even two or three Laughing Gulls. A closer look revealed some goodies amongst the herd: an adult Lesser Black-backed, a first-winter Iceland Gull and an adult Iceland (Kumlien's) Gull, showing pale grey markings in the primaries. These gulls were mostly bathing and loafing, probably having earlier visited the nearby landfill. The lake is mostly frozen over, making ID easier. The Bowie CBC is tomorrow but the gulls may not be there in force, as the landfill will be closed. Anyway, shows it's worth checking out gulls now -- the northern ones have arrived!
