Folks, I spoke with Stan Gray and got some info on the Manasas CBC that took place this last Sunday. Except for one possible unusual Thrush (pending write-up) there were no out of the ordinary rarities. Pine Siskins were reported from scattered locations, no Eve. Grosbeaks noted, one flock of Purple Finch were found, and scattered reports of Red-headed Woodpeckers came from most sectors. The 23+ Fox Sparrow numbers were record-setting, far exceeding the previous record of 6 set in 1990. The 5 or more Winter Wrens found also bested the previous record of 2 recorded several times in the past. Stan hopes to have the preliminary picture nailed down in the next few days and it should be posted then. Given Andy Ednie's report on abundant Fox Sparrows at Bombay, I wonder if Fox Sparrow numbers were up for last week's counts elsewhere? How did Central Loudoun do with Fox? What about the previous week during the DC, Seneca, and Jug Bay counts? And have others noted the dearth of Red-breasted Nuthatches and Siskins during the counts? Kurt Gaskill, kurtcapt87@aol.com
