Has Y2K struck already? I seem to be having a problem similar to Phil/Phil's computer. On Thursday, I headed down to Ocean City to nab Common Eider for my year list, convinced that it was the 30th of December. I was horrified when I arrived in Ocean City, turned on the radio to catch the weather, and heard them announce "Happy New Year's Eve." My husband George and I were supposed to make an early afternoon party in Wilmington, DE. What to do? Turn around and go home, or stay and bird? Well, the Eiders were beckoning, and there was a nice assortment of birds around, so... no party. George was nicely understanding of the need to miss the party. Here is a summary report: Griffin Rd. ponds: mostly iced over; a few Canada geese, domestic geese, mallards, coots. Ocean Pines pond: partly iced over; large numbers of Canada geese, domestic geese, one Greater White-fronted Goose; lots of Canvasback, American Wigeon, and Ring-necked Ducks; a few Northern Shovelers and Bufflehead; American Coots; one Double-crested Cormorant; Ring-billed, Great Black-backed, and Herring Gulls. Golf Course Rd. Pond: wholly iced over; a large conglomeration of waterfowl sitting on the ice in a big circle, bunched so tightly they were difficult to id: a few Tundra Swans, but mostly Canada Geese, Mallards, Black Ducks, and Canvasbacks. OC Inlet: Common Eider (3 adult males, on the rocks, beautiful viewing, plus 1 imm. male and a female), Surf Scoter, Black Scoter, Harlequin Duck, Oldsquaw, Black Duck, Ruddy Duck, Brant, Common Merganser, Red-breasted Merganser, Red-throated Loon, American Oystercatchers, Purple Sandpiper, Sanderling, Ruddy Turnstone, Bonaparte's Gull, Northern Gannet (1 imm., almost overhead, plunged into surf). 4th St. Flats: Ring-billed, Great Black-backed, and Herring Gulls; Red-throated and Common Loon; American Oystercatcher, Purple Sandpiper, Sanderling, Ruddy Turnstone. 32nd St. Extension: Horned Grebe; Red-throated and Common Loon; Common Merganser, Red-breasted Merganser, Bufflehead. Indian River Inlet: Bonaparte's, Ring-billed, Great Black-backed, and Herring Gulls; Oldsquaw, Red-throated and Common Loon; Common Merganser, Red-breasted Merganser, Bufflehead, Ruddy Duck. Very cold, but almost no wind, good viewing overall. Happy New Year to all!
