I spent the weekend scouting for the Carroll County Winter Bird
Count on Saturday, January 23 (all welcome). Highlights were:

	2 Wood Ducks sitting on the ice of Westminster Reservoir on 1/2.
	15 Redheads at Piney Run on 1/1 along with 275 Ring-necked Ducks
		and 160 Hooded Mergansers.
	2 Harriers at the owl field near Taneytown.
	1 Snipe in the spring-fed stream at Wakefield.
	1 Bonaparte's Gull flying by my house on 1/1 (a new yard bird);
		then 22 at Piney Run which is only about a mile away.
	4 Short-eared Owls at the owl field near Taneytown on 1/3.
	100 Horned Larks near Jasontown on 1/3.
	15 Robins, a late migrating flock dropping in to Piney Run on 1/2
	1 Lapland Longspur in the Horned Lark flock near Jasontown on 1/3

Low lights: 1 Black Swan at Piney Run on 1/1 and a Ruddy Shelduck in a
flock of geese at Meadow Branch on 1/3.

	Anyone interested in helping with the Carroll winter count please
e-mail me. We have lots of territory with very few people.
