Dear Fran, I would tell them that the mockingbirds' natural food sources may be a bit thin this winter due to the drought we experienced in late-summer and fall of 1998. It's way too early for the birds to be on breeding territories and the fact that two birds seem to be sharing the same winter feeding territory may be pointing up the relative scarcity of natural foods this year. Tell them to be sure to keep feeding, especially during this cold snap when the demands on the over-wintering birds are at their greatest.
