ospreyers, thanks for your advice last week on central delaware coastal birding. I ended up going to Little Creek WMA, but was not able to get there within an hour of dawn, or stay until an hour before dusk, so SE Owl is still on my hoped-for list. best bird was least sandpiper, 3 seen at close range among a flock of about 100 dunlin at the end of Port Mahon Road. A male harrier and a TV (but no owls or birders, for that matter) were working the marshes. A couple dozen shovelers and a half dozen ruddy ducks in one of the few nonfrozen sections along the dike. One whole corner of the distant sky was dark with more birds in the air than I've ever seen at one time, but so far away that even at high power, my humble spacemaster could only make out large wings. Canadian geese? Jim Felley's mixed flock of american and fish crows out for a weekend at the shore? rural delaware was lovely, but my trip was marred by the delaware state police, who pulled me over at one of the speed traps along Rte 9 for going 40 mph in a 25 mph "zone," the zone commencing with a sign at the edge of Leipsic with a cop hiding directly behind it. Opportunity to slow down from the 50 mph limit between towns was nil; it's clear you have to know in advance where the traps are (a couple are mentioned in Claudia's book). Guess the state must be seeking to reduce the number of tourists. rob Robert Weiner (rweiner@gwis2.circ.gwu.edu) International Business Department George Washington University Washington DC 20052 202 994 5981
