We visited Little Creek, Port Mahon, and Indian River inlet on
Monday, searching for Sharp-tailed Sparrows as encountered on the local
CBCs. We especially searched the marshy area south of the
"campground" at
Indian River inlet, but found none. There were Palm Warbler and Horned
Lark in the campground itself. In the channel, tho', we saw an adult and a
first winter f White-winged Scoter; ~50 Bon'p's Gulls off-shore (a mere
echo of the 500 in the channel 2 weeks ago), and ~ 20 Purple Sandpipers.
Nearby, a Tri-color heron flew past.
At Little Creek, along the dike, we saw at least 5 Am Bitterns, some
quite close, tho' none of the target sparrows.
At Pt Mahon, there were 2 Least Sandpipers mixed in with ~100 Dunlin.
Also, at the impoundment, some 35 PB Grebes and ~ 60 Coot - all mixed
tightly together with a few Shovellers.
In the marshes at Prime Hook at sunset, there were 2 GH Owls, but no
Short-eareds were seen.
