Hi all -- Barry and I took advantage of the bee-oo-tiful day and went over to the Eastern Shore to chase some birds. We did middling well, missing some and seeing others -- (the usual story of course). Highlights included 14 Wild Turkeys in a field just west of Vienna -- they all looked to be males, sporting long beards -- Common Eiders and Harlequin Ducks at O.C. Inlet, Black-headed Gull near the marina at Indian River Inlet. We looked for, but did not see, the Clay-colored Sparrow along Evans Rd. near Berlin (there seemed to be fewer sparrows in the hedgerows today compared to mid-month). There were a number of Horned Larks singing in the fields and Red-winged Blackbirds were also singing in various little marshes. Didn't catch up with any Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrows either, we think the tide wasn't high enough, but did see one Salt-Marsh type and a yellow Palm Warbler at the site. No Short-eared Owls at Broadkill. Despite a few "dips", a great day with a real hint of spring in the air! Gail Mackiernan gail@umdd.umd.edu
