Spent an hour on the Bayview Trail at Mason Neck State Park this morning (Friday, Jan. 29th). Possibly because I was the only person there, bird sightings were great! Whole rafts of Buffleheads out on Belmont Bay, a small flock of Tundra (Whistling) Swans near the shore, a mixed flock of Mallards and American Black Ducks taking off, and, best of all, a close-up view of a mature Bald Eagle taking off from his perch right next to the path! Facility update: the park has just installed a paved trail to the campfire area and the osprey overlook platform, making both accessible to the handicapped. Dex Hinckley 703-354-1342
