I had a male Downy Woodpecker with a reddish wash on the upper breast and throat in the backyard today. It's 'mustache', was almost a brick red. Not a trick of the light, I observed him twice, once through my scope. Maybe he was excavating a cedar tree, but no red on the side of the face- any ideas? Tom Beal Glenn Dale, MD
