Folks: Greg and others posted the sighting for the Slaty-backed Gull for Thursday, 2/11/99. What they didn't mention was that though the bird was initially found at about 8:30 and seen for a short time before it flew off, Jane relocated it around 9:15 or so and it stayed until most of us left it at about 10:15. This seems to be a change in its pattern. The bird was most cooperative during the second sighting and stayed on a flat rock preening. There was a Great Black-backed and Herring Gull adjacent for comparison. Michael O'Brien located a first winter Thayer's Gull about 15 feet away from the Slaty-backed just to spice things up. Hope the predicted nasty weather doesn't chase the Slaty-back away for all the folks who are surely going to twitch it over the weekend! -- Good Birding!
