Hi All:
I braved frigid temps/bitter wind today on a field trip with a local group,
and was rewarded with the target bird, a gorgeous adult male King Eider, on
lake Ontario in the Hamilton area. Also huge ( thousands ) mixed rafts of
Scoter, Scaup and Oldsquaw.
Also of interest was the opportunity for close study of 15 tagged adult
Trumpeter Swans and 2 immature birds, untagged and presumed to have
migrated from a nesting site. There is a release program in Wye Marsh,
Ontario that has been quite successful. Adult Tundra Swan was present for
comparison.
This past Tues. I birded the Guelph area with an ABA member who showed me
some of his favorite spots. We had a Common Snipe, very uncommon in these
parts in the winter time. We did not find the Eurasion goldfinch that had
been reported.
Off to Niagra falls tomorrow for Sun/Mon. Am looking forward to getting
home by the end of the month, miss my stomping grounds.
