The bird was present c 0620 to 0750 (when I left) Since I worked most of yesterday I didn't feel too guilty darting over to Sandgate Road in the predawn hours this morning. A small flock (c 25) of gulls flew in and landed on the pilings in front of the Sea Breeze Restaurant around 0620. I thought I could pick out the dark-backed bird even in that light. And as the light got better, I had many very nice views. (Perhaps due to the bright light my color descriptions generally are a little darker and a littler brighter than those posted yesterday by Mike O'Brien.) The gull spent much of the interval standing (or sitting) on pilings in front of the Sea Breeze, but also moved up river at least 150 beyond the Sandgate Restaurant. It also came in and landed on the waterfront edge of the Sea Breeze parking lot (as if expecting a handout?) for a couple of brief stays. Sherman Suter Alexandria VA 22307 ssuter@aaas.org
