For all of you who might be coming down to see our possible Kelp Gull, be advised that Paul Baicich received a message from Alvaro Jaramillo saying that "...vocally Kelp Gulls are quite different from other gulls, in fact they are closest to Yellow-footed in their long call. If someone can get the gulls quarreling over a piece of bread and a reasonable recording can be made, it could settle the ID issue with a high degree of certainty. Even a crappy little recorder and a cheap mike can obtain a workable recording of a gull, since they are so loud." Paul goes on to say, "Clearly, what Alvaro is referring to is the relatively distinctive, low-pitched call of the Yellow-footed Gull. (This Yellow-footed call is on the video, *Large Gulls of North America* at 49:32.) Perhaps a tape recorder is in order the next time the gulls starts fighting over French fries!" So, bring those tape recorders! Jane Kostenko jkostenko@somd.lib.md.us California, Maryland 301-475-4513 (work) 301-862-4623 (home)
