In view of the postings today about the color tone of the mantle of the St. Mary's County ? Kelp Gull I am forwarding, with Bill Mauck's permission, the following comment he emailed to me in response to my posting on the subject: >"Also for what it's worth, make that 3 observers who think the mantle color >of the ?Kelp Gull is as dark as the individual GBBG present within the >limits of the viewing conditions we had at the time". > Bill Mauck bill@ mauck.org Taking into account Elliot Kirschbaum's assurance that both he and another viewer judged the ? Kelp Gull to be a "darker, crisper black" than a Great Black-backed seen "with the same lighting and facing the same direction", I do think it quite likely that the color of the ? Kelp Gull is close enough to that of Great Black-backed that any perceived difference may depend upon the individual Great Black-backed with which the comparison is made.
