Friday, 2/19, was my first visit to see the Kelp Gull, and it was a most rewarding visit indeed! The primary feature to note is that the bird is so easy to find. It is not hidden amongst 10's of thousands of other similar looking gulls, but instead it stands out as a large dark-backed gull amongst only 30 or so Herring Gulls. Occasionally a few Great Black-backeds come around, but for the less experienced birders, this is a great foreign bird that you can actually see. So no one should hesitate to make the trip. I do wonder still about the name. I saw no sign of the bird eating any kelp. Perhaps this one needs to be renamed something like SeaBreeze Shrimp Gull. With all those fine shrimp that the SeaBreeze cooks supplying, how will this bird ever again be happy with a return to kelp? Les Roslund Easton, MD
