From 6:15 a.m. until we left it at 5:30 p.m., the St. Mary's County, MD, Kelp Gull put on a particularly spectacular show for the 230+ birders who came today (including a CNN film crew). The bird was also featured on ABC's Baltimore WMAR 2 News at 6:30 p.m. today, and a story was carried in a Richmond paper. After today's front-page coverage in the Washington Post, the Kelp Gull drew many regional birders in addition to those traveling from North Carolina, Eastern PA, New Jersey, and New York. Birders from the U.K, California, Florida, the Netherlands, and Alaska, who are luckily in the area for other reasons, also have been to see the bird. We topped 550 cumulative, since 2/14/99. Sunday's weather is to be warm, but rainy, with 20+ mph winds. Jane Kostenko jkostenko@somd.lib.md.us California, Maryland Yesterday is history; tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That's why they call it the PRESENT.
