Dear Ospreyers,

We had some wonderful support last year from the folks here on
MDOsprey for the MOS's first attempt at sending a team to
the World Series of Birding. And that team did us proud! Hal
Wierenga, Lynn Davidson, and Mark Garland birded for 24
soaking wet hours, tallied 155 species of birds, and came in
third behind the "unbeatable" Cape May team and the
"awesome" Canadian team.

Well, folks, let me tell you something...New Jersey hasn't heard the
last of the Maryland Ornithological Society Team ! ! ! This year the
Maryland Yellowthroats are back and stronger than ever in their
attempt to show Mike O'Brien that he never should have left home!

Once again the team is led by Hal Wierenga and Lynn Davidson.
This year they are joined by two power birders, Marshall Iliff and
Mark Hoffman. Marshall, as you probably remember, was a member
of last year's winning team in the Texas Birding Classic, a three-day
test of birding savvy and physical endurance. Mark Hoffman is
also known as "Mr. Worcester County" and is right up there at the top
in the constant competition for most species seen in Maryland.

Once again the Maryland Yellowthroats will go head to head with
some of the finest birders in North America in their 24-hour quest
to see more species of birds in Cape May County than any of the
other teams competing this year.

How can you be part of this mighty effort? Make a pledge or make
an outright donation to the team. The funds raised by our team
go in support of MOS's research, education, and scholarship
efforts, all significant ways that our organization reaches out to
the wider community in Maryland.

Last year we netted a profit of $1,700 from your pledges and donations.
We funded an additional National Audubon Ornithology Scholarship and we
established a Mist Net Replacement Fund to be monitored by the MOS
Research Committee. We are birders and we like social activities, but
we also realize we have a responsibility to a wider community. Join with
us this year and help us make our team a huge success.

You may make your pledge directly with me via e-mail (send a note
to osprey@ari.net) or if you would like to make a donation, please
send your check, made out to MOS, to me, Norm Saunders, at
1261 Cavendish Drive, COlesville, MD 20905.

Pledges should be made in cents per species seen. If you make a
pledge, give me your mailing address as well, so that we can notify
you as soon as possible after the WSB how out team did.

We are looking also for a few very special contributors to help us
outfit our team the way they deserve to be outfitted this year,
with their own team jackets and caps. Be one of this select group,
our "Windbreaker Pledgers" by donating $100 or more to see that
our team hits the beaches of Cape May running!

I'm incredibly excited about our team this year and I hope you folks
are as well! I'm looking forward to hearing from each and every
one of you!

Good birding!

Norm Saunders
