I took a quick trip to Cambridge and Blackwater NWR, MD
Saturday afternoon, March 13, 1999. Saw a total of 67
species, the better and/or more satisfying observations include:

At Blackwater NWR:
Osprey - 2
Tree Swallows - at least 10, hard to count because they were
feeding so close to the ground, and behind the dikes.
Kinglets seemed to be very conspicuous.
   Ruby-cr. Kinglet - 8
Golden-cr. Kinglet - 1 out on Wildlife Drive

Wild Turkey - 2 flocks, 100+ birds
The first flock was along Rt. 335 north of the refuge
I estimated the flock at 70+, but they were so dense,
that you could not see the birds in the back of the flock.
The second flock of at least 30 birds was along Andrews Rd.

Short-eared Owls - at least 3 east of Shorters Wharf Road,
about 2 miles north of the bridge. We watched them from
about 5:15 until 6pm, flying and one sitting on a post.

Common Snipe - two after sunset silhouetted in the road side
ditch next to the road, say 5 feet away.

Woodcock - returning north on Maple Dam Rd., I stopped to check
for Woodcock calling. He was, and very close to the road,
using the car as a blind, we were able to watch him calling
for several minutes. He sure puts a lot of energy in to the
call, and turns around all the time also.

The waterfowl numbers seem low, migrating I assume,
but still a good list of species.
