Birding+, March 17

Hi Folks!

I started today with a little viewing from my deck in North Beach, Calvert
County. There are still lots of ducks, but bring a scope...the big rafts of
several thousand are at least a half-mile offshore. My first Northern Gannets
of the season cruised by today. Horned Grebe numbers are up to 23, but only
one Common Loon.

Work took me to the NE corner of Rt.197 and the BW Parkway in Laurel, Prince
George's County. An unidentified anglewing was my first butterfly of the year.
Birding was slow in the woods, but as I was getting ready to head back to the
office, an adult [m?] Northern Goshawk cruised by just above the treetops.

After work I drove down to Indian Creek WMA by Benedict, Charles County. As
the day ended a couple Brown Thrashers broke into song [not the typical
"whirr" call-note, but pieces of song]. At dusk I counted 8 American Woodcock.

Looking forward to dawn tomorrow.

Good Birding!

Jim
