The St. Mary's County, MD Kelp Gull was present from about 8 a.m. today, Saturday, March 20, 1999, and was still there when we left it at 1:30 p.m. The last confirmed sighting was Sunday, March 14, and when the Sea Breeze Restaurant manager said someone reported the bird flying over the river on Wednesday, March 17 at 4 p.m. Donnie Ray said it had been fed about 15 shrimp before we got to the restaurant, and then it ate a half dozen oysters on the half shell, and several more raw jumbo shrimp. Either it's stocking up for a mighty long flight or it's hungry from its long journey away (maybe now it'll be convinced there's no place like the Sea Breeze and stay a while...) The folks at the Sea Breeze Restaurant have offered to give updates. You may call them at 301-373-5217.
