This is from BIRDCHAT. I am sure someone here on MDOsprey can help Elizabeth out. Les -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [BIRDCHAT] RFI: DC in mid-April Date: Wed, 24 Mar 1999 23:34:05 -0700 From: Elizabeth Winter <ewinter@newmex.com> Reply-To: ewinter@newmex.com Organization: Box 2020, Taos To: BIRDCHAT@LISTSERV.ARIZONA.EDU I'll be in Washington DC on a contract work assignment, arriving 4/10, and working through the 16th. Tentatively, I'll be renting a car for a few days extra before I head back home, probably on Tuesday, 4/20 or Wednesday, 4/21. Most probably, I'll be visiting in eastern Pennsylvania (small town west of Allentown), and will make a little time to bird. There's a small chance I'll blow off Pennsylvania, and head out on an adventure, too. Living inland, I'm always tempted to head for the ocean... During the first week, I won't have a car, and will be staying near Georgetown University. This appears to be close enough to Rock Creek Park to walk and bird there. This is a reasonable option, no? (I'll be reviewing grant proposals, and so will have a bit of flexibility with my time.) After I'm done working, I'm open to suggestion as to where to go. I've got time to order from ABA, which I try to do before each trip - I plan to get to that over the weekend. Practically all my birding reference materials are for the West, so this is a whole new arena for me. I'm assuming I'm too early for warbler migration. I've only birded eastern warblers in the fall, so I know that I've got something special to look forward to. Some day I'll make the trek to Cape May, but probably not this time. Opinions on the following books (from ABA catalog) will help guide my purchasing decisions: Finding Birds in the National Capitol Area - by Claudia Wilds Birder's Guide to Pennsylvania - by Paula Ford Birdfinding Guide to New Jersey - by William J. Boyle, Jr. In addition, tips on mid-Atlantic list-serves would be appreciated; I've got time to sign up for a bit. I'm not big on web-sites, but if there are some that you think would be especially helpful, I'm certainly open to suggestion. Finally, I'd be interested in hearing about outings or birding-related on April 17 or 18 around the area. I'd also consider a pelagic trip (if there's any point to it at this time of year.) Thanks to anyone who can help. I'll return the favor (especially on Baja trips) when I can. Please forgive my abject ignorance of eastern birding. -- Elizabeth Winter Taos, New Mexico ewinter@newmex.com "If we don't change direction, we'll end up where we're heading." -- Reuben Snake
