They're BAAAACK again! Thursday morning, a breeding plumaged YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was back at last year's nest above my Baltimore County house. That makes the appearance one calender day later than last year, and the third consecutive nesting year here inside the Baltimore Beltway on the northwest side of town. The first year, the birds evidently showed up for a second nesting attempt, showing up in early June and raising one youngster; last year they made their appearance on Mar. 31 and proceded to raise five young. They're on schedule now for another four or five youngster summer. On a side note, spring here has been marked by Fox Sparrows from Feb. 28 to Mar. 29, Wood Frogs chuckling in our back yard pond and laying eggs, and Golden-crowned Kinglets and a Sapsucker in the last couple of days. The goldfinches here are now a mix of colors, with at least one bird still all gray, but at least one in virtually full gold color. As in previous years, anyone wishing to view the herons may contact me for directions and I will continue to hope someone will get some nice photos of the family.
