Manasas and the Piedmont, 4/3/99

Folks,

Statistics follow on birding Manasas Battlefield, 0800-1400 on 4/3.  
Highlights were Vesper Sparrows at the defunct shopping center grasslands on 
the west side of the park near I-66 resulting in a pleasant 9 sparrow species 
day.  Todd already posted on the dark/re-morph Red-tail soaring for us.  The 
battlefield netted 61 species and the day netted 77.

Great Blue Heron 1, Canada Goose 30, Wood Duck 2, Am Black Duck 1, Mallard 8, 
Ring-necked Duck 3, Black Vulture 1, Turkey Vulture 5, Sharp-shinned Hawk 1, 
Coopers Hawk 3, Red Shouldered Hawk 5, Red-tailed Hawk 3, Kestrel 1, Killdeer 
2, Common Snipe 12, Am. Woodcock 1, Ring-billed Gull 4, Large Tern sp. (prob 
Caspian flying very high) 1, Rock Dove 6, Mourning Dove 5, Belted Kingfisher 
1, Red-bellied Woodpecker 6, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 2, Downy Woodpecker 4, 
Hairy Woodpecker 2, No. Flicker 10, Eastern Phoebe 6, Tree Swallow 2, Barn 
Swallow 1, Blue Jay 8, Am. Crow 18, Fish Crow 1, Carolina Chicadee 42, Tufted 
Titmouse 17, Carolina Wren 4, GC Kinglet 5, RC Kinglet 1, Eastern Bluebird 
22, Hermit Thrush 1, Am. Robin 16, No. Mockingbird 6, Cedar Waxwing 2, Euro 
Starling 38, Yellow-rumped Warbler 22, Pine Warbler 4, No. Cardinal 15, 
Eastern Towhee 5, Chipping Sparrow 2, Field Sparrow 19, Vesper Sparrow 2, 
Savannah Sparrow 16, Song Sparrow 21, Swamp Sparrow 6, White-throated Sparrow 
9, Junco 24, Red-wing Blackbird 32, Eastern Meadowlark 4+, Com.Grackle 33 (No 
great boats here!), Brown-headed Cowbird 4, House Finch 9, Am. Goldfinch 15.

Afterwards we visited Dulles Wetlands, Lake Manasas and Fauquier Co. from 
1430-1700  Additional and notables were:

Com Loon 1, Pied-billed Grebe 1, Double-crested Cormorant 6, Green-winged 
Teal 96 (Dulles wetlands), Blue-winged Teal 8, No. Shoveler 5, Am. Widgeon 2, 
Hooded Merganser 2, Osprey 2, Bald Eagle 1 (on nest at Lake Manasas), No. 
Harrier 1,  Kestrels4,  Red-tails 2, Am. Coot 8, Gr. Yellowlegs 5, more Snipe 
at Dulles wetlands, Boneparte Gull 4 (Lake Manasas), Purple Martin 12,  Barn 
Swallow 2, and burger kinglets somewhere.
