Kevin Fehskens and I went birding today at Tydings Marina, Harford Glen, and
Edgewood Arsenal. After a similar trip last wednesday that was disappointing
for early migrants, we faired better today. From 0730 - 1330 we netted 75
species. Highlights included 12 Caspian and 2 Forster's Terns along with a
Shoveler at Tydings Marina. Harford Glen hosted a number of migrants that
were not there last wednesday. We saw many Chipping Sparrows, 7 Palm
Warblers, 6 Pine Warblers, a House Wren, and a Louisiana Waterthrush. At
Edgewood we found another Pine Warbler and numerous ducks. In the large
flock in the Gunpowder River, we had both Scaup, 387 Ruddy Ducks, 9
Canvasback, a Redhead, and 9 Horned Grebes. I probably would not have found
the Redhead or the Canvasback had I not been counting the Scaup, because of
advice given to me by Jim Stasz Saturday. By the way Jim, I'll send you the
numbers shortly. Another surprise was that there were no Juncos around
considering the many I had at Point Lookout on Friday.
